Initial situation and challenges
Phishing scams, shock calls, fake online stores, alleged debt collection letters, emails or text messages from supposed banks: when it comes to fraud detection, financial service providers are constantly having to adapt to new challenges. In particular, the real-time detection of fraud attempts is critical to success. Atruvia, an IT service provider for the German „Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken“ and other companies and central institutions in the cooperative financial group, is also dealing with this issue. Due to the high volume of data, Atruvia has taken on this challenge with the help of a highly scalable big data solution in its own data center, which checks transfers for known fraud patterns in real-time. The performance of the system is of crucial importance here. This is because in financial transactions, such as bank transfers, every millisecond counts, especially at the point between the customer‘s request and the actual execution.
When the market for big data distributions changed and the software previously used by Cloudera was restructured, it became imperative to migrate the big data cluster and Atruvia looked for an alternative big data distribution. The team found what it was looking for in Stackable, a provider of a modern and modular open source data platform from Germany.
“The Stackable team always gave us the feeling that we were their priority. We really felt that we were in good hands at all times. This level of commitment to our project and this fast and technically sound service is something we have never experienced from others before.”

The solution for Atruvia AG
The Stackable Data Platform offers users a curated selection of the best open source data apps for data storage, data processing and data analysis, with Apache HBase and Apache Hadoop HDFS selected as the central components for fraud detection. Modularity and flexibility make it easy to upgrade individual apps or add additional components. Even components that were not included as standard in the Stackable Data Platform were identified during the course of the project and also supported by Stackable in consultation with the customer.
As the Stackable Data Apps run on Kubernetes, the change in big data distribution also enables migration from a bare metal installation to a modern Red Hat OpenShift Private Cloud.
Finally, it was important to Atruvia that Stackable subjects its software to continuous vulnerability tests in accordance with current European security standards in order to maintain the security of its platform at a very high level.
Result and Successes
Working closely with Stackable‘s support and professional services team, Atruvia‘s team of experts successfully migrated their fraud detection system to a modern, open and future-proof solution based on the Stackable Data Platform.
The switch from a bare-metal installation to the Red Hat OpenShift Private Cloud was made possible by the Red Hat OpenShift certified Stackable components. The new solution is operated fail-safe in two data centers. Extensive performance tests in the production system after go-live confirmed that the solution meets the expected performance standards. Performance and security were even improved compared to the previous platform.
Not only during the entire migration project, but also during productive operation, Stackable‘s service team now ensures constant consulting and reliable support for the application.
The result is convincing: not only is the Atruvia team very satisfied with the use of the Stackable Data Platform. The previous costs in the area of fraud detection have been more than halved thanks to the switch to Stackable. A clear win!
