Between Open Source and Cybersecurity: Stackable Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Wedel, 30.09.2025. Stackable, the provider of a globally used open-source data platform, is celebrating its 5th birthday. On September 30, 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown, Lars Francke and Sönke Liebau founded the company. Among other events, a user meeting will be held in Munich on October 23 to mark the anniversary.

According to the founders, launching Stackable was not a long-planned move. Lars Francke and Sönke Liebau, who have known each other since their youth, worked as consultants for several companies. When the free version of a data platform they were using was discontinued, the idea of bringing an alternative to market was born in a pandemic-induced shared apartment. Completely transparent and based on open source. Over the past five years, the company has grown to nearly 20 employees and achieves annual revenue in the seven-digit range. The Stackable data platform is used by financial institutions, public authorities, and industrial companies.

Due to the constantly increasing number of cyber threats, Stackable has continuously optimized its security strategy in recent years. Since the data platform uses various open-source components, the IT experts rely on a fully traceable software supply chain, their own update tool called Patchable, and a two-tier strategy: They prioritize potential vulnerabilities based on actual risk and provide targeted security updates. Stackable is authorized as a CNA, advises the European Commission on the Cyber Resilience Act, and supports companies in implementing the DORA Regulation.

Lars Francke, CTO at Stackable, says: “It’s incredible what can come from a spontaneous idea. Our team is constantly growing, and we work with partners all over the world – something we could only have dreamed of five years ago. While we have reason to celebrate now, we won’t be resting on our laurels. The recent attacks on the npm package manager show how important a robust security concept is.”

CPO Sönke Liebau adds: “The fact that open-source software is no longer a niche product is demonstrated by the latest Open Source Monitor from Bitkom. Nearly three-quarters of German companies use such solutions. And we are proud to be part of that. Secure open-source software is exactly the right tool to advance digital sovereignty in Europe.”
