Case Study: Stackable Data Platform for Discovery

Case Study: A Modern Data Platform for Artificial Intelligence

Background: Discovery, a leading South African financial services organization, supports over 60 data scientists with a data platform for advanced analytics and machine learning. Their legacy on-premises setup—including HBase, YARN, HDFS, Kafka, NiFi, and CDSW—faced challenges like package management issues, version conflicts, and inefficiencies with Kubernetes. HDFS was poorly optimized for their InfiniBand network, causing overhead and underutilized hardware.

Challenge: Discovery needed a flexible, scalable solution to simplify updates, reduce operational complexity, and support growing data science and AI demands. Their existing infrastructure was rigid, time-consuming to maintain, and unable to meet performance requirements for modern workloads.

Solution: Discovery migrated to the Stackable Data Platform, leveraging its Kubernetes-native architecture. They replaced HDFS with VAST DataStore, adopted Trino (replacing Hive and Impala), introduced Apache Iceberg for storage, and upgraded from Spark 2 to Spark 3 for GPU acceleration. The migration of 400 TB of data was completed over a weekend with minimal downtime.

Result: The new platform delivered greater agility, scalability, and operational efficiency. Shared infrastructure now supports ETL, streaming, and machine learning across business units. Operator-managed components reduced complexity, enabled tools like Ray, and improved query performance. Enhanced data virtualization and an open-source approach ensure future-proof adaptability and innovation.

Case Study: Stackable Data Platform for Atruvia

Case Study: Real-time Fraud Detection

Background: Atruvia, the IT service provider for Germany’s Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, is responsible for handling critical banking operations, including fraud detection, across its network. They needed a robust and scalable system to ensure high-performance fraud detection to combat the increasing variety of phishing attempts, scam phone calls, and other fraud risks.

Challenge: Atruvia’s existing big data platform was struggling to keep up with the high volume of real-time financial transactions where every millisecond counts. The existing platform was becoming outdated and inefficient. The company needed a modern solution that could meet performance requirements and ensure data security while maintaining strict regulatory compliance. When their previous platform provider restructured, Atruvia needed an alternative solution that was both scalable and adaptable to their evolving needs.

Solution: Atruvia selected Stackable and its Stackable Data Platform to deploy Apache HBase and Hadoop HDFS for its real-time fraud detection system. Stackable’s modular design allowed Atruvia to seamlessly migrate to a Red Hat OpenShift private cloud, improving both performance and reliability.

Result: The Stackable platform’s flexibility and support for European security standards ensured that Atruvia could effectively address its performance and compliance challenges. The migration resulted in a more efficient and secure fraud detection system that operates reliably across two data centers, reducing fraud detection costs by more than 50%.
